One of the simplest ways to avoid a speeding ticket apart from driving safely is to invest in a radar detector. These are devices that can detect radar guns used by cops and alert you about their presence, so that you can control your speed before you get caught. However, there are certain points you must keep in mind, before purchasing one.
The first thing you must check for in a radar detector is the bands it can detect. While most radar guns use the Ka band, there are also those which use the X and the K band. Of late laser guns (which support the KU band) are also becoming popular. Apart from this law enforcement agencies also the photo radar or the POP which uses low frequency radar to photograph your license plate. Therefore, a radar laser detector which can detect all these would be your best option (though it maybe a little expensive). If you are on a budget look for a radar detector that can detect at least the three main bands i.e. the Ka, X and K.
The second most important consideration should be the range, generally the more the range the better it is. A radar detector with a wide range will alert you sooner so that you have more time to get your act together, however, wider range does comes at a price, so choose a detector that's the closest to your budget.
You must make sure that the radar detector has good battery back-up; you don't want to be caught off guard because your detector's battery went dead, right? Ideally you should buy one that comes with a spare rechargeable battery.
Once your three basic criteria have been met, you may also look for extra features like voice alerts, anti detector detection, different detection modes (to guard against false alarms) etc.
Finally, before buying a detector do make sure that it's not illegal to use one in your state.
